Tire-European Union E-MARK certification

1. Introduction

Since from October, 2002, all automobile, electronic and electric products entering EU market need to pass the E-MARK certification and have the e marking as per the 72/245/EEC and the requirements of 95/45/EC to gain the permission of EU customs and entering markets.

E-mark comes from regulations issued by Economic Commission of Europe (ECE). ECE consists of 28 European countries including EU members, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe and other non-European countries. ECE regulations are recommended for all members, not mandatory standards, Member States may apply ECE regulations or continue to use their own regulations. Seeing from the market Demand, ECE members usually are willing to receive ECE regulations test reports and certificates. E-mark certificate relates to the product components and system components, there is no corresponding vehicle certification regulations and E-mark certified products is accepted by the market. Products with E-mark certification include automobile bulbs, safety glass, tires, warning triangle, car electronic products, etc. Implementing test institutes of E- mark certification are generally the technical services in ECE member countries.

2. E/e mark certifying institutes

The governments of E ECE members are as the certifying institutes of granting E-mark certificate. Every country’s certificate has a corresponding number:

E1-German; E2-France; E3-Italy; E4-Holland; E5-Sweden; E6-Belgium; E7-Hungary; E8-Czech; E9-Spain; E10-Yugoslavia; E11-English; E12-Austria; E13-Luxembourg; E14-Switzerland; E16-Norway; E17-Finland; E18-Denmark; E19-Romania; E20-Poland; E21-Portugal; E22-Russia; E23-Greece; E25-Croatia; E26-Slovenia; E27-Slovakia; E28-Belarus; E29-Estonia; E31-Herzegovina; E37-Turkey;

E/e mark is the certification mark for motor vehicle, safety components and systems used compulsorily by member states in accordance with European Commission with EU Directive. The test institute must be domestic technical services of EU members, certifying institutes are governments’ transport sectors of the EU members, E/e mark certified products are accepted by all EU members.

3. Test standards and regulations

1) ECE R30 Uniform provisions of motor vehicles and trailers pneumatic tires certification

Suitable for the pneumatic tires of M1, 01, 02 while not applicable to the tires of vintage vehicles and racing car.

2) ECE R54 Uniform provisions of commercial vehicles and trailers pneumatic tires certification

Suitable for the pneumatic tires of M2, M3, N, 03, 04 with speed above 80km/h

3) ECE R64 Uniform provisions of tires and vehicles certification with spare tires

Suitable for the M1 spare tires

4) ECE R108 Uniform provisions of motor vehicles and trailers renovating pneumatic tires certification

Suitable for the renovating pneumatic tires of passenger car and trailers while not applicable to the renovating pneumatic tires of commercial vehicles and trailers, motorcycles, vehicle manufacturing before 1939, racing car and wild use vehicles and the tires without E-mark and T-type spare tire.\

5) ECE R109Uniform provisions of commercial vehicles and trailers renovating pneumatic tires certification

Suitable for the renovating pneumatic tires of commercial vehicles and trailers while not applicable to renovating pneumatic tires of passenger vehicles and trailers, motorcycles, the tires with the speed less than 80km/h, the tires without the speed mark and load coefficient, and the tires without E-mark.

6) ECE R117 Uniform provisions of tire friction noise and road holding in wet road of vehicles M1, N1, 02 and tire C1.

Suitable for the spare tire, the tire with the nominal diameter less than 10 inch, the racing car tire, the tires excepting M, N, O and the tires with speed less than 80km/h.

4. Inspection items and special requirements

4.1 inspection items

2) load/speed/endurance test

3) tread wear indictor

4) braking and off tracking(temporary spare tires)

5) adhesiveness (temporary spare tires)

4.2 special requirements

1) As for the radial tires with speed above 300m / h, the mark "R" in the front of the rims must be replaced of "ZR", and noting the speed symbol Y and the corresponding load index, the instructions must be in parentheses, such as "(95Y)".

2) Tire production date must be within the validity period of the certificate, and internationally accepted four codes are used.

3) Tire wear marks have at least six, almost equally spaced and located in the main tread groove. As for the tires of diameter of 12 and below, four horizontal tread wear indicator are used.

4) Certification mark shall be marked on the tire.
