UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) with the meaning of "consistent tire quality grade" is regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) which totally consists of three levels. Tire manufacturer, tire trademark holders and other people submit data to NHTSA for the application of listing. After listing, the NHTSA has the conformity test to the tire selling in USA according to conditions in the U.S. government regulations. The three levels are:

Wear Index

This is a number that represents the difference of the tread life corresponding to the standard level of 100. The range of tread wear is usually from 60 to 500, increasing 20 points one time. But in fact the actual life of any tire is determined by the quality of the road surface, driving habits, filling pressure, condition, tire storage and experienced circumstances.

In order to understand the level of tread wear, the tire is tested under the specified control conditions of the test process, no need for the test under the actual tire application situation.

Traction rating

Traction rating is to measure the capacity to make the specific tire moving in a straight line on a slippery test road to stop, not the linear acceleration capacity. Traction rating test are conducted only on a concrete and tarmac with specific slippery extent (simulated rain most of the road) for straight forward sliding, the rating obtained from these tests do not represent the level of dry ground tracking, tracking of the curve or drainage. Traction rating is divided into A, B, C level, of which the A is the highest level.

Temperature resistance rating

Temperature resistance rating is also divided into three grades, a level being the highest. Temperature resistance rating represents the tire's ability to correctly maintain the heat dissipation under controlled indoor test conditions. The test is that under specified conditions, high speed tire carrier with 75 miles from the beginning of the interval in ascending five miles of is continuously running for 30 minutes until the tire burst. If the tires meet the minimum performance requirements of DOT, then it is classified to "C" grade while "B" and "A" grades represent the performance level higher than minimum requirements of DOT.
