(EPA) SMARTWAY certification in the American Environmental Protection Agency is a third-party demonstration of an international authoritative testing institute, specially for the certification of more efficient and energy-saving cars, tires and other auto parts. The tires passing the SMARTWAY certification must meet rolling resistance indicators established by SMARTWAY to help auto reduce fuel consumption for the aims of fuel consumption reduction, air quality improvement and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
SmartWay itself has a set of rating criteria. The composite score of vehicle is not less than 12 points, of which the score of air pollution reduction reaching at least 5 points. Meanwhile, SmartWay also named elite vehicle that is excellent in environmental performance. The composite score of these vehicles is not less than 17 minutes, air pollution reduction scoring higher than 8 points.
SmartWay Technology Group has established three sets of technology validation criteria, including reducing vehicle idling emission system, pneumatic equipment and tires. The truck tire certified by SmartWay meets their established rolling resistance and can save fuel of truck convoys. Through SmartWay-certified tires can be used in the U.S. federally funded projects, and the tractors and trailers certified by SmartWay require the use of SmartWay-certified tires.
At present, SmartWay makes the certification to the tires of long-distance transportation tractor trailers new fittings of the 8 level trucks (8 level truck for long-distance transportation is the heavy trucks) and provides rolling resistance target value for each of the tires. The tire rolling resistance indicator was made as early as in 2007, and SmartWay technical group determine the maximum rolling resistance value for tires certificated. In order to establish certification standards, SmartWay technical group obtained rolling resistance data for new tires of heavy trucks for long-distance transportation of the three best-selling tire manufacturers.
Compared with the international advanced tire companies, domestic tire companies lag behind further for the SMARTWAY certification. The products passing the SMARTWAY certification in China currently include only the brands of Double Coin, Triangle, Giti, Linglong, Sailun and Zhongce (West Lake).
