South Africa SABS Certification Introduction

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is a South African statutory body that was established in terms of the Standards Act, 1945. This third party offers systems and products certification of South Africa. Besides its responsibility of formulating standards, SABS also holds the management of compulsory regulation standards aim to offer identification-using accessories for qualified products and at the same time, responsible for pre-shipment detection and test, certificate issuing on behalf of South Africa and some main purchasers. SABS certification is widely used in areas such as chemicals, biological, fiber & clothing, mechanical, security equipments, electrical, civil & construction and vehicle products. In recent years, SABS plays an important role in controlling imports and exports for South Africa government.

There are mainly 8 categories of SABS products certification: chemicals, biological, fiber & clothing, mechanical, security equipments, electrical, civil & construction and vehicle products. Products involved with construction materials are as follows: stoneware, concrete products, roof material, cement, lime, cement mixture, natural building used-stone, safety glass, steel structure, wood & woodwork, brick, tile, paint, coat and sealant.

Precondition of SABS logo acquisition

1. Products comply with a SABS/SANS national standards;

2. Products should pass relevant standard test;

3. Only in the condition that both products and quality are qualified can a product apply for SABS logo-using;

4. Conventional products tests should be carried out under guidance and the tests results should be submitted and be made public;

5. Quality system evaluation should be conducted twice annually and all contents are involved.

General procedure of SABS certification

1. A complete application form should be filled by manufacturer;

2. Another application form is required if the factory has more than one workshop. Every product on the certification span should be written on the form. Besides, the reputation application form of the person in charge should be filled by factory. This person will responsible for payment of the first auditing fee and other certification fees;

3. An auditing quotation will be sent after SABS’s receiving of the application form;

4. SABS will conduct a factory auditing after the quotation is accepted;

5. SABS will make preparation for annual surveillance contract after all the auditing above has been approved;

6. There will be 1 or 2 auditors carrying out random inspection annually. Fees for annual surveillance auditing and testing will be specified clearly on the contract;

7. Random inspected samples will be brought back to laboratory by auditors;

8. Following samples will be extracted from the purchasers in South Africa by SABS. More samples are required to be sent by factory if the goods batch is less than 4 times annually. Relevant fees should be undertaken by the factory;

9. Fees for samples and another test should be undertaken by the factory if the testing results failed to be qualified;

10. Validity term for the certificate is three years. The term will be different when the certificate is cancelled due to some other reasons.
